Unemployed residents of New Jersey fear their personal information will be used for identity theft

June 5, 2009

As if collecting unemployment in New Jersey and trying to find a job wasn’t difficult enough, now residents that have been collecting unemployment compensation are dealing with the possibility of identity theft.

Social Security numbers and other personal data was accidently sent to the wrong companies, meaning thousands of unemployed residents could be affected.

The state is reminding those affected that the information was just redirected due to a clerical error and not technically “stolen,” but insist that unemployed residents continue to monitor their credit in the event of suspicious activity.
