Seaview Financial Trashes Personally Identifying Information
April 1, 2009
Recycling bins at the Mariners Elementary school recycling site was home to thousands of personal documents, later linked to the financial broker Seaview Financial. Boxes of files were dropped off at the recycling site, and was found by an innocent resident stopping by to drop off some newspapers for recycling.
The owner of Seaview Financial, Paul Reed, claims that he hired a company to destroy the documents, but would not provide reporters with the company’s name, phone number, or the receipt showing the company was paid to burn or shred the documents. This leaves many to believe that someone within the company carelessly dumped the boxes of files off at the recycling center.
These documents included a plethora of personal information, including social security numbers and credit reports. If in the wrong hands, this data could be used to commit identity theft.
Police later arrived at the recycling center to remove and destroy the documents.
Previous clients of Seaview Financial should notify the police of any suspicious activity or use of the information for identity theft or other identity crimes. It is unknown if any of the information had been received in the wrong hands. Clients should strongly consider identity theft protection.
