Johnson County employees accidently receive attachment in email of personal information of some 8600 people

August 3, 2009

Kansas City’s Johnson County employees were shocked to receive an attachment in an email that contained the names and Social Security numbers of about 8600 people.

The file was attached by mistake and sent to 49 county employees, and the error was discovered within the hour. All recipients of the email were asked to delete the information, and officials met with the employees to confirm deletion of the data.

At this point, there is no reason to believe that the information was mishandled or reproduced, but precautions such as credit monitoring should still be taken in the event of suspicious activity on your accounts.
