Closed home improvement company dumps sensitive paperwork in dumpster, leaving thousands possibly at risk for identity theft
August 4, 2009
Home Solutions Pro, a home improvement company located in North Carolina, is under investigation after a church pastor found files from their company thrown away in a back dumpster.
One of the Home Solutions Pro locations had closed, and the man who owned the area said they left behind a lot of business equipment, files and an expensive mess to clean up. He stated that he brought the documents to a shredding company, and was just as shocked to hear that they were found in a dumpster in town.
The paperwork found in the dumpster belonged to customers that had not even worked with the Home Solutions Pro company for some years now. The information on the paperwork included Social Security numbers, bank accounts and credit reports.
Investigation is still underway, as whoever is responsible for the dumping of the personal data may face fines for not destroying the information as required by law. Previous customers of the home improvement company are encouraged to enroll in identity theft services to continually monitor their personal accounts for any unusual activity.
Johnson County employees accidently receive attachment in email of personal information of some 8600 people
August 3, 2009
Kansas City’s Johnson County employees were shocked to receive an attachment in an email that contained the names and Social Security numbers of about 8600 people.
The file was attached by mistake and sent to 49 county employees, and the error was discovered within the hour. All recipients of the email were asked to delete the information, and officials met with the employees to confirm deletion of the data.
At this point, there is no reason to believe that the information was mishandled or reproduced, but precautions such as credit monitoring should still be taken in the event of suspicious activity on your accounts.
